Czech forward Ales Kotalik was the last player who touched the puck as it found its way to the net 3,7 seconds in overtime, when Leafs defenseman Bryan McCabe attempting to clear it from the front of the net unfortunately put it in his own goal. The game-winning goal was credited to Kotalik, whose shot during a 4 on 3 powerplay from the left faceoff circle has been stopped by Leafs netminder Andrew Raycroft (37 saves), right before McCabe knocked it over the goal line.

Mike Modano became the highest-scoring born American to play in the NHL. His third minute goal in tonights' game at San Jose tied Phil Housley's record (1232 points).

In another match the Washington Capitals needed an overtime to get a win over the Montreal Canadiens. The game ended 5:4 as Capitals' star Alexander Ovechkin scored four times including an overtime winner to get his league leading 43rd goal of the season and added an assist. "Today was a special day," Ovechkin said with a smile. "I broke my nose, have stitches (and) score four goals. Everything (went) to my face.

It looked like it should from the beginning of the season. But the Rangers have been struggling all season, and after yesterdays' 0:4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers they are at the last place securing the final spot for playoffs qualification in Eastern Conference with 56 points, standing just two points ahead of the ninth New York Islanders.

In another game the New Jersey Devils also overcame a first period three goals deficit and won in the overtime against the Boston Bruins 4:3. Zdeno Chara, Glen Murray and Dennis Wideman (on power play) scored for their team early, but two second period goals by Patrik Elias and Zach Parise gave hope to the home team, who managed to tie the game in the third period when Parise made his second goal of the night 13th of the season to force the overtime.
