Habs won to prove role
Slovakian defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky was traded to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Jarrett Stoll and defenseman Matt Greene.
Drafted in 2000 ( fourth round ) by the Los Angeles Kings, Visnovsky collected 279 points in 499 games. Two years ago, "Visna" became the first Kings defenseman to finish the regular season with most points in the team ending at 67 ( 17 goals ). Last year he signed a new contract in Los Angeles worth 28 mil. Dollars till 2012-2013 season, but he will be paid from the next season by his new employer,
the Oilers.
"Although it is tough to see good players and good people move on, we feel we've made a step towards improving our overall offense," Oilers GM Kevin Lowe said in a statement released by the team. "Lubomir is a world-class defenseman, who has been one of the premier offensive defensemen over the past five years." ( nhl.com )
"It's never easy to give up a player of Lubo's caliber, but for the direction of this franchise, this exchange allows us to add two players who fit the long-term vision for this team," Kings GM Dean Lombardi said in a statement. "We appreciate Lubo's service and outstanding play these last seven years in Los Angeles. He was not only a great player for us, but a class act." ( nhl.com )
